This is a seasonal scouting report giving growers in the Western New York area information on the presence of sweet corn pests and recommendations on scouting and thresholds. The report is written by Abby Seaman, NYS IPM's Area Extension Educator for Vegetables. For 5/26/09 The first European corn borer moths were caught at a few locations this week. I'll include information about managing ECB in plastic and row cover corn in next week's report. Anyone planning to use Trichogramma ostriniae for managing corn borers in their early plantings should contact Carol Glenister at IPM Laboratories (315-497-2063) as soon as possible with information about their plantings (acreage and planting dates). Wasp releases in the earliest planted fields should coincide with the moth flight. For more information on using Trichogramma for corn borer management, see Using Trichogramma ostriniae to help manage European corn borer in sweet corn, peppers, and potatoes.f
