This is a seasonal scouting report giving growers in the Western New York area information on the presence of sweet corn pests and recommendations on scouting and thresholds. The report is written by Abby Seaman, NYS IPM's Area Extension Educator for Vegetables. For 6/17/08 ECB-E trap catches are down from last week at most locations, Z catches are still mostly increasing. ECB egg masses and larvae were found in tassel emergence and silk stage fields scouted today. Corn that was in the early tassel stage or later when moths started to fly may not show damage in the emerging tassels. Sprays in these fields can be based on estimated egg hatch from an initial increase in trap catches, followed by another application after peak flight, or may be scouted for egg masses to make a spray decision, using a threshold of 5% infested plants. Bare ground fields can be scouted for damage in the emerging tassels as usual, with spray decisions based on a threshold of 15% infested plants.
