Sweet Corn Pheromone Trap Network for Western New York, 2006

This is a seasonal scouting report giving growers in the Western New York area information on the presence of sweet corn pests and recommendations on scouting and thresholds. The report is written by Abby Seaman, NYS IPM's Area Extension Educator for Vegetables.

For 9/26/06

This is the last trap network report of the season.  Many thanks to everyone who contributed!

Just a few locations reporting this week.  A few ECB-Z race are still flying this week.  Corn earworm catches were high at a couple of locations this week, and I noticed that in one late field in Seneca county fresh silks were emerging from ears in which the silks had already dried down.  CEW will happily lay eggs in these new silks, and we did find tiny larvae in that field.   Fall armyworm catches remain high at several locations.  Fall armyworm larvae can also end up in the ear tips, so if catches are high, a spray may be warranted. Only fields more than a week from harvest need to be sprayed, as egg hatch and larval growth will be slow with the cool weather conditions.
