This page is the online version of a listserv intended to facilitate communication about late blight in New York and the contiguous states and Canadian provinces. The report is collected by Abby Seaman, NYS IPM's Area Extension Educator for Vegetables. To send a message to the listserv, address it to: cce-staff-lateblight-l@cornell.eduFor 7-15-08: Late blight finds in the past week: From Beth Gugino 7/14: Late blight has been confirmed in two commercial potato fields in Erie Co., PA. The field first confirmed is a younger field where symptomatic plants are distributed in several locations within the field. It has been recommended that at minimum, infected portions of the field especially in the low areas be destroyed. (Barb Christ emailed you about this field last week on July 9th but I don't think you received the email.) The second field is within three weeks of harvest. The signs and symptoms are in one small section of field. It was recommended that destroying the crop in this area in addition to additional fungicide applications will help minimize spread until harvest. One of the growers indicated today that there might be additional positive fields in the county but these cases have not been confirmed. Erie Co. has received a considerable amount of rain over the last week or so. The forecasted weather for this week is hot but much drier. From Barb Christ 7/9 (info on the same location): We have our first report of late blight on potatoes in Erie Co. I have not seen it yet or have any more information. I know that they just had 2 inches of rain. Erie County is in the northwestern corner of Pennsylvania. |
