Eastern New York Field Crops Pest Report, 2002

Alfalfa

Alfalfa Weevil: Today I found very small alfalfa weevil larvae (1/16 1/8 inch long) in a few alfalfa fields at the SUNY Cobleskill Farm. Alfalfa weevil larvae are light green with a white stripe down their back and a dark brown head. Tip feeding by larvae was about 5 % or less in all fields scouted.

Grass

Armyworm: Lisa Fields and I placed a few true armyworm pheromone traps on two farms in Schoharie County this week. They were placed in grass fields where there were high populations of armyworm last season.

Field Corn

Planting: Fields are being prepared for planting.
